Confessions of a Native Son
Confessions of a Native Son
Confessions of a Native Son
Confessions of a Native Son is a Podcast that focuses on thought-provoking & engaging dialogue about race, culture, and business, from the perspective of African-American Naval Academy graduate, entrepreneur, and Marine Officer, Mike Steadman.
In this raw and unedited episode, my Co-Producer, Mike Loyd, joins the show to rant with me for a bit. One thing we've both learned in our entrepreneurial journeys is that "no one is going to save you." Mike and I share how we came to this conclusion, and how we're using it to fuel our success. As always thanks for sharing your time with us and I hope you enjoy the show.
In this episode, I open up about my first year in the Marine Corps, and the challenges I faced as a young black officer. I share details about my performance, living and working in what felt like an all-white world, and the humiliation I felt.
This was the hardest episode I've recorded yet. Sharing this aspect of my life brought back a lot of negative memories and feelings that I've tried to push past. My hope is that by opening and sharing my experience, I'm able to foster an open dialogue about race and culture in the military. As always, thanks for sharing your time with me and I hope you enjoy the show.
In this episode, I discuss Author Gay Hendrick's book, "The Big Leap: Conquer Your Hidden Fear and Take Life to the Next Level." I came across the book last year, thanks to my business Coach Bill Watkins, from the Lion's Pride, and it's has been instrumental in my personal & professional growth. I'm currently going through the book for the fourth time, as I continue to take my own Big Leaps with IRONBOUND Boxing and Dope Coffee. The book made me self-aware of my upper-limit problem, the self-doubt, self-sabotage, and insecurity that emerges every time I dare to step into my greatness. I open up about my personal limiting beliefs, the Stories I tell myself, and the other mental demons I battle on a daily basis. My hope is that opening up about my struggles, you're able to find some self-awareness in your own life. As always, thanks again for sharing your time with me and I hope you enjoy the show.
The following is another legacy Episode, recorded prior to the COVID-19 Pandemic, where I interviewed Lance John & Mekeisa brown from the Gifted Sounds Network, an American podcasting creation, production, and distribution network based in Brooklyn, New York. Lance and his team are curating diverse talent from all across the country, with the intent of building a larger than life podcasting platform for people of color. I first met Lance and his team after appearing on the "Super Upper Punch" podcast with Rich Rodriguez. I had an itch for starting this podcast and I viewed my chance encounter with Lance as the universe giving me a sign. Over the course of a few months, we discussed the idea of launching "Confessions of a Native Son," until finally one day, I decided to pull the trigger and host the show on the Gifted Sounds Network. Today's show marks episode 11, of what once just an idea. In this episode, we discuss how Lance and Mekeisa founded Gifted Sounds, the importance of protecting one's intellectual property, and the black podcaster landscape. As always, thanks again for sharing your time with me and I hope you enjoy the show.
In this episode, I discuss why" boxing is wellness" and how my brand, IRONBOUND Boxing, is using our training methods to improve the health & wellness of people of color. Due to the abundance of chronic health issues such as diabetes, obesity, and other ailments, within communities of color, we are disproportionality affected by COVID-19. With the challenges of social distancing, PTSD from months of quarantine, and economic hardships, As a nation, we need to come up with creative solutions to help mitigate death from COVID-19 and future respiratory viruses. My hope is that by discussing IRONBOUND Boxing's approach to addressing these issues, we can manifest them into existent. As always, thank you for sharing your time with me and I hope you enjoy the show.
In this episode, I challenge the myth of higher education and its role in educating young men & women of color. I discuss the limits of our current educational system, the ROI on a college degree in today's economy, and where I see the future of educated headed. This episode was recorded prior to the COVID-19 Pandemic, whose aftermath will raise more questions on the legitimacy of our current educational system. With the economy in shambles, unemployment rising, and schools turning to online education, I doubt our understanding of traditional education will ever be the same. As always, thanks again for sharing your time with me and I hope you enjoy the show.
What's going on everyone, Welcome to another edition of Confessions of a Native Son, I'm your host Mike Steadman. I'm a Marine Corps Veteran, Entrepreneur, and Aspiring author, who enjoys thought-provoking and engaging dialogue about race, culture, and business.

Like many of you, I got punched in the face last week and dropped to the canvas due to the Corona Virus & The COVID-19 Pandemic. With everything going in the world currently and the challenges our world leaders face due to COVID-19, a lot of my original subject matter for this platform has lost meaning for the moment. So for this episode, I discuss the effects of the Corona Virus on my personal life, business, and our nation. Now more than ever, I truly appreciate you sharing your time with me and I hope you enjoy the show.
What's going on everyone, Welcome to another addition of Confessions of a Native Son, I'm your host Mike Steadman. I'm a Marine Corps Veteran, Entrepreneur, and Aspiring author, who enjoys thought provoking and engaging dialogue about race, culture, and business.
On this Episode I discuss "A Soldier's Play" by Charles Fuller, a Pulitzer prize winning play that explores the complicated feelings of anger and resentment that some African-Americans have towards one another, and the ways in which many blacks have absorbed racist attitudes. I discuss how the play is still relevant today, why it's important for us to have these discussions. As always, thanks for sharing your time with and I hope enjoy the show.

In our modern day lense entrepreneurship has become a huge trend. People fantasize over quitting their jobs, becoming their own boss, and gaining financial freedom. Everyone wants to be the next Steve Jobs, Oprah or Jeff Bezos. We get caught up with social influencers and billion-dollar startups aka the land of fairies and unicorns. People often forget the time, energy and money that gets invested into earning these magical moments. The nights spent crying, waking up to negative bank account balances, spats of depression, or working 22 hour work days. All entrepreneurs go through phases of misadventures. We are driven, persistent, hardworking, ambitious, we are doers, and these are our stories.
We are back from a short Break with the doing the most podcast. After weeks of reflection, I’ve come to one key realization which is that WE ARE NOT OKAY. Now that we have acknowledged here’s what we will do next.
In various spaces, although I was welcomed and embraced there was always a looming sense of “I am an outsider, I don't belong here”. This feeling brought on a huge sense of loneliness in my life. I was surrounded by people externally but internally I felt alone.
I have been stuck in my head for almost the past 2 years. Social media will do that to you, grief will do that to you, depression and anxiety will do that to you. Lack of Belonging and community will do that to you.
